Taiwan starups make waves at BIO International Convention

A delegation comprising eight biotech startups from Taiwan, with support from the National Science and Technology Council, is taking part in the BIO International Convention June 16-19 in the U.S. city of Boston to showcase their cutting-edge biomedical products and innovative technologies.

The group of firms spans sectors such as artificial intelligence-based pharmaceutical research and development and treatment for cancer and neurodegeneration, the NSTC said. Among the participants, Taipei City-based Pharmasaga Co., a developer of novel small-molecule drugs to treat and reverse diabetes, is a finalist in the Start-up Stadium, a program that provides startups the opportunity to engage with the global investment community

Also represented in the delegation are Taipei-based TrusTrue Bioscience Co., which is developing a humanized antibody that selectively targets toxic, misfolded TDP-43 oligomers in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Hsinchu County-based Anivance AI Corp., which provides organ-on-a-chip solutions to accelerate development of new pharmaceuticals.

The group will take the opportunity to visit the Engine, a nonprofit incubator and accelerator spun out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2016, and the U.S. branch of Denmark-based pharmaceutical powerhouse Novo Nordisk to discuss possible cooperation in areas such as clinical trials and early-stage pharmaceutical R&D.

According to the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Promotion Office under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the country’s expertise in AI-driven health care, biomanufacturing and precision medicine is on full display at the Taiwan pavilion, themed “Taiwan, Your Best Partner in Asia.” It features 35 local firms, one industry association and six research institutes.
