UpdatesTaiwan steps up promotion of green transition
The Ministry of Environment hosted a seminar July 29 in Taipei City to disseminate information acquired at a carbon pricing workshop June 24-26 in Berlin.

Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming led members of the Green Growth Alliance to Germany in the end of June to gain in-depth understanding of the design and implementation of cap and emissions trading systems (ETS), the MOENV said. It anticipated that the July 29 seminar, hosted by Deputy Minister Shih Wen-chen, could further encourage enterprises in the process of lowering carbon emissions.

Chu Chia-wen, senior manager at Kaohsiung City-headquartered Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX), noted that TCX signed a memorandum of understanding with Leipzig, Germany-based European Energy Exchange June 27 and added that the pact would assist Taiwan with the establishment of a transparent carbon market.

According to the MOENV, Liou Je-liang, deputy director of the Center for Green Economy at Taipei City-based Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, pointed out that the carbon pricing system would complement standardized regulations, innovation funds, subsidies and technical policies to achieve the best possible governance.

Speaking at the seminar, Shih said that the government pledged to optimize the carbon fee mechanism to stimulate stable transformation and facilitate sustainable development while continuing to host workshops to deepen mutual trust between academia, government and industry. (POC-E)
