Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs concluded a memorandum of understanding with Access Now Aug. 20 in Taipei City to jointly organize the 13th edition of the RightsCon summit series next February in the capital.
In its press release Acess Now praised Taiwan’s globally recognized free online environment, whole-of-society approach to human rights and vibrant civil society. The organization added that they believe Taiwan to be the best fit to convene RightsCon, a community focused on human rights in the digital age.
According to the MODA, the pact was signed by its Deputy Minister Lin Yi-jing and Raman Jit Singh Chima, Asia Pacific policy director and senior international counsel of Access Now, a New York City-based nonprofit that focuses on digital civil rights.
The event will feature over 500 sessions covering 18 digital fields, and is expected see an in-person attendance of more than 3,000 academics, experts, officials and professionals from 150 countries, with another 7,000 taking part online, the ministry added.
Lin said at the signing ceremony that since its establishment in August 2022, the MODA has spared no effort to implement measures that strengthen Taiwan’s digital resilience through public-private sector cooperation in cybersecurity governance and the construction of a low-earth orbit satellite environment.
The decision by Access Now to host RightsCon in Taiwan is a clear acknowledgement of the country’s efforts in this regard, Lin said, adding that the MODA will ensure that the global event presents Taiwan’s achievements to the world in order to strengthen its role as an indispensable global partner in democracy.
Chima said Taiwan ranks sixth globally in internet freedom and has made a strong commitment to developing and enhancing digital democracy, adding that he has great confidence in the success of the 2025 RightsCon. (SFC-E)
