The 2026 Tug of War Indoor World Championships are coming to Taipei Arena in the capital March 12-15, demonstrating Taiwan’s capacity for organizing and hosting international events and competitions.

Taiwan won the right to hold the 2026 world championships after a vote by representatives of the Tug of War International Federation’s member associations via video conference in 2021, the Ministry of Sports said, adding that in November 2025, TWIF staff visited Taiwan to witness preparations for the event and offer professional advice on competition and venue arrangements.

The upcoming tournament will draw more than 100 teams from 20 countries. One of these is Taiwan’s national women’s 500-kg team, which took its sixth consecutive gold medal at the World Games in Chengdu in 2025 and claimed the title for the third year running at the 2024 Tug of War Indoor World Championships, the MOS said.

The national team is composed of all nine gold medalists from last year’s World Games. The MOS added that members started training in January and took only three days off during the recent weeklong Lunar New Year vacation.

The MOS pledged that Taiwan would continue its policy of sports diplomacy by hosting matches and events with international teams and athletes. (POC-E)
