Four Taiwan troupes have been selected to feature at France’s 2024 Festival Off Avignon, spotlighting the vibrancy of the country’s performing arts sector.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the groups chosen for the event running July 3-21 are Resident Island Dance Theatre, Shinehouse Theatre, Chun Dance and Eye Catching Circus.
RIDT was established in 2010 by choreographer Chang Chung-an and is well-known for using powerful and dynamic body movements and stylistic experimentation to provoke thought on social issues. The group will present its work “In Factory” at the festival.
Founded in 2006 with Zeke Lee as executive director and Chung Po-yuan as director, Shinehouse Theatre frequently collaborates with writers and other creative professionals to enrich its productions. The troupe has staged over 100 performances at global events including Bangkok Theatre Festival and Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival and is to perform “The Rodin Project—Lady Macbeth” in France.
Set up in 2012 and currently led by Hsieh Yi-chun, Chun Dance will stage a 45-minute piece consisting of movement without a story line, while Eye Catching Circus, established in 2015 and now supervised by Li Shih-yang, will showcase a reflection of contemporary views on women in “#Since1994.”
Launched in 1947, Festival d’Avignon is one of France’s foremost art events, with the “Off” portion introduced in 1968 to incorporate avant-garde, spontaneous performances at informal venues such as restaurants and theater schools. (YCH-E)
