Taiwan, US expand higher education cooperation

HomeUpdatesTaiwan, US expand higher education cooperation
Representatives from Pennsylvania College of Technology visited Taiwan Nov. 17-22 at the invitation of the Ministry of Education to broaden bilateral cooperation.

Comprising Vice President Anthony Pace and Patrick Marty, chief government and international relations officer, the delegation was in Taiwan to better understand the country’s higher and vocational education systems and their development, the MOE said.

Director Joyce Yu-jiuan Lee of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education praised the U.S. institution for its applied education programs and success in promoting industry connections at a Nov. 21 reception for the group.

Lee noted that the college received a Department of Labor grant totaling $8 million in 2019 to support the training of over 3,200 apprentices in five years in the advanced manufacturing sector. These achievements show that Penn College and Taiwan’s higher education and vocational institutions share a high degree of complementary strengths, she added.

According to the MOE, the group called on several local higher education institutions during its six-day stay and focused on disciplines such as sustainable architecture, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, aviation maintenance, nursing and hospitality management.

Penn College also signed a memorandum of understanding with National Formosa University in Yunlin County, the American school’s first with a Taiwanese counterpart, the ministry added.

Statistics show that 5,082 U.S. individuals came to Taiwan to study in 2024, while 23,157 Taiwanese went to the U.S. to further their education. (SFC-E)
