Taiwanese performing groups and art professionals will take part in the annual meetings of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals and the International Society for the Performing Arts taking place later this month in New York.
With support from the Ministry of Culture, the groups’ attendance highlights efforts by the government to raise local artists’ visibility in the international arts community.
The MOC said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York’s Taipei Cultural Center will collaborate with the National Taichung Theater and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts to organize the Taiwan pavilion during the annual APAP conference Jan. 9-13.
Locally based groups Théâtre des Enfants Terribles, One Litre Sound, Antinomy Company and Shimmering Production will showcase Taiwan’s vibrant creativity in dance, music, puppetry and theatre, while Contemporary Legend Theatre will stage two demonstration performances that combine the elements of Peking opera and modern Western theater.
The MOC said Lin Chih-wei, founder of FOCASA Circus, and Lo Yin-ru, an independent producer, will take part in the annual ISPA congress under the auspices of the ISPA Taiwan Fellowship Program to engage with counterparts from around the world.
Equally impressive, “Eternal City” by Resident Island Dance Theatre and “Blur” by Riverbed Theatre are among the 10 projects selected at the ISPA’s “Pitch New Works” session, which offers groups an opportunity to promote their projects to curators and art professionals in North America, the ministry added.
The TCC said it has been supporting the participation of local art groups and professionals in the APAP and ISPA annual assemblies for over a decade and has created a digital catalogue providing the information of 66 groups from Taiwan for global promotion. The center is committed to expanding Taiwan’s role in the meetings while cultivating administrative performing arts personnel to deepen international connections, it added. (SFC-E)
