Three works by artist Shawn Liu are featured at the ARCOmadrid: International Contemporary Art Fair underway through March 8 in the Spanish capital, highlighting the vibrancy and creativity of Taiwan’s contemporary art scene, according to the Ministry of Culture.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain’s Culture Division and Genalguacil Pueblo Museo, a museum village in Spain’s Málaga province, collaborated to launch a two-year project facilitating artist-in-residence programs and exhibitions. Under the initiative, Liu was an artist-in-residence at the museum from last September to October, the MOC said.

Liu said that his creations were inspired by his life in Genalguacil, where he experienced the simple harmony between people and the natural environment. His works on display at ARCOmadrid, “Emerging Landscape,” “Still Light” and “Light and Stone,” form a circular narrative centered on light, stone and time, reflecting his observations of the area’s geology.

He added that ARCOmadrid is an important platform for Taiwan to engage in deeper artistic dialogue with the international community. Works created during his residency are currently featured in his solo exhibition, “The Bones of the Earth, The Breath of Light,” running through Oct. 18 at the Genalguacil Pueblo Museo, the ministry said.

Chang Yu-hsuan, director of the TECO in Spain’s Culture Division, expressed hope that Liu’s work would spark greater interest among European audiences in Taiwanese art, the ministry added. (POC-E)
