Taiwan’s guavas, mangoes get green light for export to EU

Taiwan-grown guavas and mangoes have been cleared by the EU Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety for shipment to the region, marking a new chapter in government promotion of local agriculture export to the world.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the development reflects global recognition of Taiwan’s capabilities in plant quarantine and plant disease and pest control. It also paves the way for the country’s farmers to expand the presence of local produce in high-end overseas markets, the MOA added.

The MOA said as Taiwan is a designated quarantine pest zone for oriental fruit flies and melon flies, and mangoes and guavas are common hosts for the pests, the country’s mangoes and guavas could not be exported directly to the EU in the past.

After demonstrating Taiwan’s heat and cold treatment protocols, which have long been accepted by Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, the EU recently approved Taiwan’s application, the ministry said.

The government will continue to work with local farmers to ensure that they follow the global traceability and export quarantine standards, and will help expand cooperation with partner distributors and organize promotional events in targeted markets.

The MOA said it is prioritizing cooperation with agricultural business operators in France, Lithuania, Poland and the Netherlands to bring Taiwan’s quality agricultural products to consumers in the countries. (SFC-E)
