The talks come amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington over the potential delivery of US Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding a phone conversation with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, who confirmed the conversation announced by American media on Truth Social, saying the call is “ongoing” and “a lengthy one.”
The discussion comes amid escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington over potential US deliveries of Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine.
It is unclear what topics the two leaders are discussing but it’s widely believed that their conversation is centered on the Ukraine conflict, particularly as the phone call comes ahead of Trump’s upcoming meeting with Vladimir Zelensky on Friday.
The Trump-Putin phone call comes after the US leader hinted at the possibility of supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles, which would be capable of reaching the Russian capital, if no progress towards a peace deal is made.
Moscow has condemned the potential move, arguing that it would obliterate the good will established between Russia and the US and would ultimately have no effect on the battlefield situation. The delivery of the weapons to Kiev would also force Moscow to take necessary retaliatory measures, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Thursday’s phone call marks the first contact between Putin and Trump since they met in person in Anchorage, Alaska in mid-August to discuss the Ukraine conflict, as well as restoring bilateral ties.
Moscow has indicated that since the summit, there has been a noticeable winding down of communication with Washington. Nevertheless, Russian officials have stated that the Alaska process is “not finished” and that the “spirit of Anchorage” is still “alive.”
