Trump announces new pick to run Justice Department

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration amid sexual misconduct allegations

US President-elect Donald Trump has announced former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his new nominee to lead the Justice Department hours after his initial selection withdrew. The announcement came via a post on social media Thursday, following former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from consideration for the role amid sexual misconduct allegations.

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform. He expressed confidence in Bondi, describing her as “smart and tough” and an “AMERICA FIRST Fighter.”

Bondi, who served as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, was previously involved in a Trump-led commission aimed at addressing the opioid crisis and combating drug addiction. Trump praised her efforts against drug trafficking, highlighting the importance of these issues under her potential leadership.

Trump’s attorney general pick withdraws

In response to Trump’s announcement, Gaetz spoke highly of Bondi on social media platform X, calling her “a stellar selection.”

Gaetz was nominated by Trump a week prior but withdrew, saying his confirmation process would be a “distraction” to the incoming administration. Presidential cabinet picks require Senate approval, and Gaetz faced significant opposition not only from Democrats but also some Republicans.

The former congressman was embroiled in controversy over allegations related to inappropriate conduct with underage individuals, which he has denied. Though the Justice Department concluded its investigation without pressing charges, the House Ethics Committee continued to review the matter – reportedly thanks to California Congressman Kevin McCarthy, whose ouster from the speaker’s chair last year was spearheaded by Gaetz.
