The first batch of Altius-600M unmanned aerial vehicles was delivered to the ROC (Taiwan) Army Aug. 4, underscoring government commitment to advancing military defensive and offensive capabilities, the Ministry of National Defense said.
Following the delivery, Defense Minister Wellington Li-hsiung Koo met with Palmer Luckey, founder of the product’s California-based manufacturer Anduril Industries, Aug. 5 in Taipei City and thanked him for such swift delivery.
Drones are widely used on modern battlefields, including for scouting and communication, Koo said, adding that they are indispensable to modern troops and for asymmetric battles. The purchase and delivery highlighted the significance of the Taiwan-U.S. partnership in ensuring regional peace and stability and employing emerging technologies to counter threats from China, he noted, reaffirming that the MND will continue to procure reconnaissance and attack drones to meet the country’s defense needs.
According to Koo, the military will continue to enhance asymmetric and resilient defense capabilities. The MND’s Defense Innovation Office will further assess applications for new technology and products while integrating the results into the country’s combat power, he said.
Luckey spoke later the same day on the topic of Taiwan’s military technology revolution, sharing his thoughts on measures to apply emerging technologies to national defense. (YCH-E)
