Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim delivered a speech at the annual summit of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China Nov. 7 in Brussels to highlight Taiwan’s role in advanced technology manufacturing and the democratic supply chain.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hsiao, accompanied by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, gave a speech titled “Taiwan: A Trusted Partner in a Volatile World” at the European Parliament. She was the first Taiwanese VP to address the venue.
The VP said Taiwan is on the frontlines of democracy and is a trustworthy and responsible global partner committed to working closely with countries around the world to become an indispensable force in safeguarding global democracy, peace and prosperity.
She also expressed sincere gratitude to IPAC for its long-standing support and hoped to see continued deepening of trade and technological cooperation, enhancement of whole-of-society resilience and security exchanges, and an even higher profile for Taiwan’s international participation.
The MOFA said the VP received a standing ovation from the entire audience, which included more than 50 EP lawmakers and legislators from the world, as well as around 100 civic sector and media outlet representatives.
Prior to her speech, IPAC EU Co-Chairs Miriam Lexmann and Bernard Guetta, together with IPAC Executive Director Luke de Pulford, warmly welcomed Hsiao and Lin. Lexmann praised Taiwan’s vibrant democratic development and said it was an honor to have the VP attend and deliver her speech in person.
Upon returning to Taoyuan International Airport Nov. 9, Hsiao said she felt honored to articulate Taiwan’s importance and commitment to its global responsibilities on such an important international platform as the EP.
The VP said it is the administration’s mission to convey the voice of the Taiwanese people to the world, highlight the country’s strengths and canvass for support. Taiwan is not alone, as like-minded partners are voicing support, she said, adding that the government will engage unwaveringly with the world confidently and pragmatically. (SFC-E)
