Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said Nov. 5 that Taiwan is committed to contributing to the world across such issues as climate resilience, economic development, humanitarian assistance and public health.
Hsiao made the remarks while receiving a delegation of permanent representatives to the U.N. at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group included John M. Silk from the Marshall Islands, Marcelo Eliseo Scappini Ricciardi of Paraguay and Filipo Tarakinikini from Fiji. The delegation’s itinerary encompasses visits to the Taipei City-based International Cooperation and Development Fund during their Nov. 3-8 stay.
The vice president expressed appreciation for the delegates’ long-standing support of Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in the U.N. and its specialized agencies. She added that such support has given the Taiwanese people confidence to stand firm and never retreat because of unfair treatment.
The delegation was received by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung at a luncheon later the same day. He said that like-minded countries had joined Taiwan in opposing China’s misinterpretation of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758. The minister added that Taiwan’s Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project is part of its integrated diplomacy approach to assist in allies’ development.
Silk praised Taiwan’s contributions in multiple fields, calling it an indispensable member of the international community. Scappini reaffirmed Paraguay’s backing for Taiwan’s global participation, while Tarakinikini pledged to continue enhancing the Taiwan-Fiji relationship. (YCH-E)
