VP Hsiao receives Finnish parliamentary delegation

HomeUpdatesVP Hsiao receives Finnish parliamentary delegation
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said March 18 that Taiwan is committed to working with Finland on artificial intelligence, science and technology to jointly respond to threats and challenges in the high-tech era.

Hsiao made the remarks while receiving a cross-party delegation from the Finnish Parliament at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group includes Mats Löfström, chair of the Intelligence Oversight Committee and the Finland-Taiwan parliamentary friendship group, and Johanna Ojala-Niemelä, chair of the Audit Committee.

Despite their geographic distance, Taiwan and Finland have a great deal in common, Hsiao said. Taiwan has advantages in semiconductors and electronic manufacturing, while Finland has a leading position in the fields of telecommunications and space technologies, the vice president noted, saying that democracies like Taiwan and Finland should cooperate to advance technological development.

The like-minded partners share a commitment to freedom and democracy, Hsiao said. She added that Taiwan has learned from the resilience of the Finnish people, especially their preparedness for various crises and careful training of civilians to increase society’s ability to deal with gray zone challenges. She noted that both countries face the increasingly common threats of disinformation, cybersecurity, and interference with submarine cables and communications, adding that Taiwan is looking forward to deepening collaboration with Finland to strengthen the democratic system and advance the ability to counter interference.

The vice president went on to say that this month marks the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election, which enabled the Taiwanese people to decide their own government and lifestyle. This valuable right must be safeguarded by the current generation, she said, adding that Taiwan cherishes the opportunity to cooperate with global democracies to protect universal values and common goals.
