The artillery piece was caught at its firing position in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, the Russian Defense Ministry says
A Lancet-family drone has destroyed a Ukrainian 2S22 Bogdana self-propelled howitzer, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday, releasing a video of the strike.
The wheeled howitzer was discovered by a surveillance UAV at its firing positions somewhere in Ukraine’s Sumy Region. While the Russian military did not elaborate, the artillery piece was likely providing fire support to Kiev’s invasion force operating across the nearby border in Kursk Region.
Drone footage of the strike shows the Lancet loitering munition approaching the howitzer and diving towards it, hitting the vehicle in its rear. The artillery piece has likely sustained heavy damage to its gun and loading system, winding up disabled.
The howitzer appears to be an older Bogdana, mounted on a homegrown KrAZ truck chassis. More recent production versions of the family of artillery have been utilizing Tatra truck chassis, which makes them similar in appearance to French-supplied Caesar systems; they are easy to mix up during identification.

Like its French counterpart, the Ukrainian-built howitzer is chambered in 155mm NATO-standard caliber. The two systems, both used by Kiev, have interchangeable ammunition and share similar capabilities.
