HomeUpdatesWinners of 2025 Taiwan Literature Awards for Books announced
The Ministry of Culture released the names of winners of the 2025 Taiwan Literature Awards for Books Oct. 31.

Thirty works were shortlisted from 225 submissions, and the Golden Grand Laurel was awarded to Lin Chun-ying’s “Lightning in July” after careful deliberation by the jury, the MOC said. The prize is worth NT$1 million (US$32,000).

Set in Lin’s hometown of Beidou Township in Changhua County, “Lightning in July” presents the complexity of Taiwan’s history through the lens of the author’s family history. The committee called Lin’s writing, a mix of Taiwanese Hokkien and Mandarin, unique and classically elegant.

The ministry said that the seven works that won the Golden Book Award display a diversity of styles and topics. Among the winners is “Alpha Scorpii in Summer: Tadao Kano’s Experience Growing Up in Taiwan” by Liu Ka-shiang, which integrates biography, art, nature and literature.

Lan Yung-hsiang and Fan Jung-ying were honored with New Bud Awards, which are given to emerging writers. Recipients of this award and the Golden Book Award are entitled to a prize of NT$150,000, the MOC added.

The jury also commended shortlisted nonfiction authors for their dedication to exploring brand-new ways of storytelling. The MOC said the award ceremony is set for Nov. 16 in Taipei City. (POC-E)
