Youth agricultural ambassadors to depart for Australia

HomeUpdatesYouth agricultural ambassadors to depart for Australia
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung attended a ceremony Nov. 4 in Taipei City to send off 16 young agricultural ambassadors to visit Australia Nov. 22-30.

Lin said Australia is a strategic partner in the administration’s New Southbound Policy, and anticipates that the youths will actively explore new opportunities for bilateral agricultural cooperation and be advocates for the country’s integrated diplomacy policy.

The minister said Indigenous diplomacy is a key component in this year’s delegation. As both sides have rich Indigenous culture, the delegates will visit Australia’s native tribes and agencies. In addition to better understanding local agricultural development, the group will share Taiwan’s “one town, one product” regional revitalization project.

Lin Chia-rung, chief secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the two countries enjoy robust agricultural cooperation, as evidenced by the fact that since 2024, four species of local lychees have obtained plant breeder rights in Australia. He lauded the young ambassador initiative for promoting Taiwan’s agricultural experience with its partner countries.

Australian Office Taipei Rep. Robert Fergusson praised the robust mutual relations and increasingly close cooperation in agriculture, education, energy and technology. He encouraged farmers from both sides to adopt innovation and technology to ensure sustainable agricultural development.

Launched by the two ministries in 2017 targeting NSP partner countries, the project has sent 138 Taiwanese youths to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam so far. This year, delegates will call on local agricultural, fisheries, forestry and livestock sectors, the MOFA said, adding that direct in-person contact enhances mutual understanding of NSP partner countries in Taiwan’s younger generation.
