The future of India-US ties after PM Modi’s historic state visit

The recent official state visit of the Indian Prime minister to the United States has been seen as a great success among the global strategic novelists. This Modi-Biden meet has undoubtedly setted a bedrock for the India-US defence manufacturing ties and technological cooperation for the years to come. The two nations signed several critical agreements signifying the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations. With a focused approach on bolstering India’s defence capabilities and promoting self-reliance in critical sectors, these agreements mark a significant milestone not only for bilateral relations but also for maintaining a balance of power in Asia.

A standout accomplishment of the visit was the $3 billion deal between India and the US for the acquisition of 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Indian defence forces. These technologically advanced drones, comprising 15 SeaGuardian drones for the Indian Navy and eight SkyGuardian drones each for the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF), are set to greatly enhance India’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Of particular importance is their ability to monitor maritime boundaries, effectively responding to the escalating Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean region.

Additionally, an important memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between General Electric (GE) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the joint production of fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force. This agreement holds immense significance for India’s pursuit of self-reliance in jet engine technology, enabling the country to establish indigenous production and reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers.

The impact of these defence deals on India’s capabilities is expected to be highly positive. Experts widely regard them as game-changers that will significantly enhance India’s defence preparedness. Equipped with encrypted communication, high altitude capabilities, and long endurance, these state-of-the-art UAVs will substantially bolster India’s intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities. They will provide invaluable insights for strategic decision-making, enhance maritime domain awareness, and strengthen India’s security posture in the face of emerging challenges.

Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing Sector

The joint production of fighter jet engines aligns with India’s broader objective of fortifying its defence manufacturing sector. By establishing indigenous manufacturing capabilities, India can not only reduce costs but also enhance its technological expertise and exercise greater control over its defence procurement process. This move is vital for achieving self-reliance and bolstering India’s defence industry.

An encouraging development is the recent announcement by Micron, a leading computer storage chip maker, about its plans to establish a semiconductor assembly and test plant in Gujarat. This investment not only promotes advanced technological manufacturing in India but also aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global hub for cutting-edge technologies.

Expanding Bilateral Collaboration: Defence, Technology, and Space

Space exploration is another domain where India and the US have reinforced their cooperation. The decision to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station in 2024 and India’s participation in the Artemis Accords underscore the mutual interest in civil space exploration. Additionally, the joint mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to the International Space Station will foster collaboration in space research and technology.

India’s employment capacities could also be enhanced should the discussed matters be put to practice. As per the publication of the Biden’s government, amongst the American presidents Joe Biden is credited to having added a surplus percentage in comparison to his predecessors and India, which will undergo a major shuffle or govt in less than  a year time could experience a wave if Modi-led govt fails to pull off the longer straw after enjoying two terms of successive government.

Perhaps the condition of employment with the newly enforced NEP 2020 in near two or three decades will be a better situation than those living in an overpopulated generation. Perhaps the potential government would also build itself a sharper sense of reliable and responsible living which would then increase the economic welfare not rigidly singled on one individual but through collaborations of international and domestic exchange of participation to strike the balance of idea sharing and innovativeness.

India’s recent agreements with the US in the areas of defence capabilities, technology cooperation, and space exploration represent a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship. These defence deals and technological collaborations are poised to enhance India’s security preparedness, foster self-reliance, and promote advancements in various sectors. As the strategic ties between India and the US continue to deepen, it is evident that both nations are committed to leveraging their strengths and shared interests to shape a prosperous and secure future.

Strengthening Diplomatic Relations and Global Cooperation

The recent defence deals and technological collaborations between India and the US not only bolster India’s defence capabilities but also play a crucial role in strengthening diplomatic relations between the two nations. These agreements symbolize a shared commitment to address global challenges and promote shared values on the international stage.

Closer cooperation between India and the US in the defence sector fosters a deeper understanding and trust between the two countries. By working together to enhance their defence preparedness and technological advancements, India and the US establish a solid foundation for collaboration on broader security issues and regional stability. This partnership not only benefits both nations but also contributes to the larger goal of maintaining peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Moreover, these defence deals serve as a platform for increased dialogue and engagement between India and the US on matters of mutual concern. By aligning their strategic interests and sharing expertise, both nations can effectively address global challenges such as terrorism, cybersecurity threats, and non-proliferation of weapons. The close collaboration on defence matters paves the way for deeper cooperation in other areas, including trade, economy, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

The involvement of the Indian diaspora plays a significant role in strengthening bilateral relations between India and the US. The diaspora acts as a bridge, fostering closer ties and facilitating trade, investment, and collaborations in various sectors. Their personal connections, cultural understanding, and business networks create valuable opportunities for both countries to deepen their engagement and build stronger people-to-people connections.

As India and the US forge closer ties and engage in meaningful cooperation, they demonstrate a shared commitment to promoting democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law on the international stage. This partnership goes beyond military collaboration and extends to addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and promoting inclusive growth.

Working together, India and the US can leverage their respective strengths and contribute significantly to finding innovative solutions to these pressing global issues. The defence deals and technological collaborations between India and the US not only strengthen bilateral relations but also create a solid foundation for closer cooperation in addressing global challenges and promoting shared values. These partnerships reflect the shared aspirations of the two nations and signify their commitment to shaping a better and more secure future for all.
