Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg airports halt commercial flights due staff strike over pay

Airports in Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg have announced that no commercial flights will take off on Monday due to a strike by the Verdi union over pay.

“Due to the warning strike of aviation security control staff, there will be no commercial departures at BER today, March 13. Inbound flights may also be affected,” Berlin Airport said on its website.

Hamburg Airport also said that arrivals may be delayed or cancelled. Bremen said there would be no flights from their airport.

Verdi has called for a strike by security workers at Berlin airport over a dispute over pay for night, weekend and public holiday work that has been going on for years.

It is the latest in a series of strikes and protests to hit major European economies, including France, Britain and Spain, as higher food and energy prices hit incomes and living standards following the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
