Chernobyl Nuclear Plant restored: Ukraine tells IAEA

The Ukrainian regulator has notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the power supply line has been restored at 18:38 CET by maintenance workers in Ukrenergo, the operator of the country’s electricity transmission system.

Ukraine says it has returned the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) four days after it disappeared from Russian territory, Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement.

The Director-General received the news from the head of the Ukrainian nuclear power company Energoatom, Petro Kotin, who told him that experts had repaired two damaged lines and would now be able to bring all the necessary energy out of the NPP, where there are various radioactive waste management resources behind of the 1986 accident.

The Ukrainian regulator has notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the power supply line has been restored at 18:38 CET by maintenance workers in Ukrenergo, the operator of the country’s electricity transmission system. The Chornobyl NPP continues to operate on diesel-powered generators and will be reconnected to the Ukrainian power grid this morning, the statement said.

Earlier, the agency also informed that Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is also under Russian control, was not in a position to bring in the necessary components, equipment, and special personnel to carry out the planned repairs.

While Ukraine reports all problems related to the Chornobyl NPP, which shows that the NPP is in danger, Russia, on the other hand, has denied all claims by Ukraine that the Chernobyl NPP is in danger after being abducted by Russian troops.

On March 3, Ukraine notified the IAEA that Russian troops had taken control of the country’s Zaporizhzhia NPP territory.
