China commending and instigating Russia’s Attack on Ukraine, says US

White House describes 7-hour talks between senior diplomats from Beijing and Washington as ‘intense’; US officials say China responded positively to Russian request for aid

WASHINGTON (AP) – Face-to-face, U.S. National Security Adviser Joe Biden warned a Chinese top official on Monday about China’s support for Russia in an attack on Ukraine, as the Kremlin denies reports that it has asked Chinese troops to use it in war. .

US adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi meet in Rome, with Biden officials concerned that China is using the Ukrainian war to advance Beijing’s long-term interest in its rivalry with the United States.

Sullivan wanted clarification on the situation in Beijing and re-warned the Chinese that Russian aid – which includes helping them avoid sanctions imposed by the US and Western allies – would cost them dearly.

“The national security adviser and our team have clearly and clearly expressed our concern about the PRC’s support for Russia in the aftermath of the attack, and the impact that any such support could have on the PRC’s relationship not only with us, but with its relations around the world,” said a spokesman. Ned Price, using the initials of the People’s Republic of China.

At the same time, two administrative officials say the US has decided that China should sign Russia to agree to provide military support for the Ukrainian campaign and financial support to help curb the impact of severe sanctions imposed by the West. The officials said the test was handed over to Western and Asian partners and partners early Monday.

“Moscow has received a positive response from Beijing,” said one official, explaining a telegram sent to US ambassadors asking them to notify the authorities in charge of the information. The officials spoke of the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive information.

Sullivan made it clear during the “strong” seven-hour meeting that the Biden administration was deeply concerned about China’s meeting with Russia at this time, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.

Psaki declined to comment on whether the US believes China has already provided the Russians with military, economic or other assistance.

Prior to the talks, Sullivan unequivocally warned China to refrain from helping Russia avoid retaliation from international sanctions that have disrupted Russia’s economy. “We will not allow that to continue,” he said. Russia, however, on Monday denied that it needed Chinese assistance.

“No, Russia has the capacity to continue working, as we have said, which is in line with the plan and will be completed in a timely and complete manner,” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, White House officials are discussing whether it is possible for Biden to travel to Europe to meet with unions to discuss the Ukraine crisis, according to three US officials. The officials, who were not authorized to comment publicly and who did not want to be named, said the trip had not been completed. Another possibility is a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels on March 24 and other potential stops in Europe, according to one official.

The prospect of China providing Russian financial assistance is one of the main concerns of Biden. The U.S. official said that in recent days, Russia has requested the support of China, including military equipment, to continue its war with Ukraine. The official, who did not want to be named to discuss sensitive issues, did not elaborate on the scope of the application.

Russians have seen massive losses of tanks, helicopters and other items since the start of the war two weeks ago. Ukraine, though surpassed by Russian troops, is well-equipped with anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles. The Russian and Chinese weapons systems have limited cooperation, and it is not clear what weapons China has Russia would have lacked.

Biden officials also blamed China for spreading Russian disinformation which could be the reason why Putin’s forces attacked Ukraine with chemical or biological weapons.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put China at a disadvantage with its two main trading partners: the U.S. and the European Union. China needed access to those markets, yet it also showed support for Moscow, joining Russia in declaring “borderless” friendships.

Asked at a daily forum on Russia’s reported request for help, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said: “The US has been spreading deadly information about China recently over the Ukraine issue. It is cruel.”

“What is pressing now is that all parties must exercise restraint and strive to alleviate the situation, rather than exacerbate the situation,” Zhao told reporters. “We should encourage the settlement of officials instead of exacerbating the situation.”

Officials from Biden say Beijing is spreading Russian false allegations that Ukraine was using chemical and biological weapons labs with US support. They say China provides a boost if Russia continues to launch biological or chemical weapons attacks on the Ukrainian people.

When Russia began blaming other countries for preparing to launch a biological or chemical attack, Sullivan said on Sunday, “it ‘s good that they are likely to do it themselves.”

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told ABC “This week,” he said “we have not seen any indication of any kind of chemical or biological attack yet, but we have taken a closer look at this.”

The shocking US allegations about Russia’s disinformation and China’s involvement came after Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said she had no evidence that the US was funding chemical and biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine.

The Russian claim was echoed by Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao, who claimed there were 26 bio-labs and related facilities in “which the U.S. Department of Defense has absolute control.” The United Nations has said it has received no information backing up such accusations. Advertisement

There is growing concern inside the White House that China is aligning itself with Russia on the Ukraine war in hopes it will advance Beijing’s “vision of the world order” in the long term, according to a person familiar with the administration view who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to comment publicly.

China has been one of few countries to avoid criticizing the Russians for its invasion of Ukraine. China’s leader Xi Jinping hosted Putin for the opening of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, just three weeks before Russia invaded on Feb. 24. During Putin’s visit, the two leaders issued a 5,000-word statement declaring limitless “friendship.”

The Chinese abstained on UN votes censuring Russia and has criticized economic sanctions against Moscow. But questions remain over how far Beijing will go to alienate the West and put its own economy at risk.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Monday that he had asked his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to use Beijing’s influence over Moscow to end the war.

“We are at a historical moment that requires responsibility and vision of all world leaders,” Albares told Wang during a telephone conversation on Monday, according to a statement from the Spanish ministry.
