‘People’s Convoy’ truck protest continues in Washington, Govt. Reluctant

WASHINGTON, March 6 – Hundreds of trucks, recreational cars and vehicles roamed the outskirts of Washington on Sunday, to protest peacefully resulting in slowing down the traffic in the capital as part of a protest against the epidemic mandates.

The “People’s Convoy,” which originated in California and drew participants from across the country, demanded that all barriers related to the epidemic be lifted. Protests erupted last month that crippled Ottawa, the Canadian capital. However Government seems totally reluctant towards their demands.

Leaders of the league said on Monday they would once again drive down Beltway, a 40-mile [64 km] highway around the city, although details of the incident were not immediately clear.

Hundreds of cars gathered on Friday and Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway, a Maryland race about 129 miles northwest of Washington.

On Sunday morning, many traveled in a procession to drive two slow-moving legs in Beltway. They blew trumpets as they departed, while spectators waved American flags, according to Reuters witnesses.

The convoy, which is more than 2 miles long, slowed traffic in Beltway by late Sunday morning, but it did not stop. It returned to Hagerstown Speedway this afternoon, according to messages on the Telegram channel.

Protests by the anti-vaccination unit and other epidemic restrictions have diminished in recent weeks as major US cities reversed mask instructions and other measures to combat COVID-19 through disease and hospitalization.

President Joe Biden, a Democrat, signed in his State of the Union address on Tuesday that the country was entering a new phase of the epidemic without business closures, school closures or other daily disruptions.

At the racetrack on Friday night, one participant who described himself as the best truck driver told the excited crowd that he would be driving his truck in the center of the American capital.

“D.C., the government, whoever it is, can claim to have all these objections waiting in D.C.,” the man said. “But that flag on the back of my truck will land on Constitution Avenue between the White House and the Washington Monument.”

U.S. officials have been working with state and local authorities for weeks to prepare for the possible arrival of a series of vehicles, according to a U.S. official who requested anonymity to discuss internal operations.

A report from the United States Department of Homeland Security (February 26) to the Reuters law enforcement agency stated that trucks could disrupt emergency services depending on the size of the protest.
