Russia takes Control of Mariupol and steel plant after 531 Ukraine soldiers surrender

The full control of the Mariupol steel plant has been taken over by Russian troops, the country’s defense ministry said on Friday. It was the last stronghold of Ukraine in the city. The last group of Ukrainian troops, detained at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, surrendered. There are an estimated 531 people in this group.

The development marked the end of a three-month siege. In a statement, the department said, “The site of the Azovstal metallurgical plant … has been completely liberated.”

On Friday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu again informed President Vladimir Putin that both Mariupol and the steel base were under Russian rule, he said.

“The buildings under the company, where the militants were hiding, were fully controlled by Russian troops,” the Russian statement said.

In total, 2,439 Ukrainian defenders volunteered in the past few days, he added.

Mariupol has been bombed by Russian troops for weeks amid heavy tensions between Ukrainian and Russian troops. The city was in the throes of food, electricity, and water during the Russian bombing. The Red Cross and the UN had previously excluded civilians from Azovstal ironworks.
