Spain has announced a landmark amnesty that will allow up to 500,000 undocumented migrants to gain legal work and residency, marking a sharp policy shift compared to much of Europe’s tightening immigration stance. The move is aimed at addressing labor shortages in key sectors like agriculture and tourism while expanding the country’s tax base.
The Spanish government confirmed that undocumented workers who entered the country before January 1, 2026, and can prove at least five months of continuous residence with valid documentation, will be eligible to apply. Applicants must also have a clean criminal record. Successful candidates will receive a one-year residency and work permit, enabling them to transition into formal employment and legal residency pathways. Applications open on April 20, 2026, both online and in person.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the initiative as “an act of justice and necessity,” emphasizing that migrants already contributing to Spain’s economy should be integrated into the formal system with equal rights and responsibilities.
