India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant described the 2023 New Delhi declaration as “very ambitious” and “progressive” in the lead-up to the G20 Summit in Brazil. Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Kant emphasized that India will “bring the legacy” of the New Delhi declaration to the summit. He highlighted key topics such as sustainable growth, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and technological transformation, which were central to the declaration during India’s G20 presidency in 2023.
“India is bringing the legacy of the New Delhi declaration because it was a very ambitious and forward-looking document. Several issues relating to sustainable growth, the SDGs, technological transformation, women-led development, and green development pacts are prominently featured,” Kant said.
“The New Delhi declaration has been a constant point of reference because it was progressive, forward-looking, and encapsulated many of PM Modi’s visions, such as sustainability, leaving no one behind, and promoting sustainable growth while eradicating poverty and hunger,” he added.
Under Brazil’s presidency, Kant observed that many of the issues raised by India are being reflected in the agenda. However, he noted that the ongoing Middle East conflict is expected to dominate discussions at the summit. While acknowledging the humanitarian impact of the conflict, Kant emphasized that the G20 remains primarily a platform for economic growth and development.
“Geopolitics remains a contentious issue. Following India’s presidency, the Middle East conflict has caused significant humanitarian damage, and it is being discussed. However, the G20 is primarily a forum for economic growth, development, and progress,” Kant said.
