India, represented by Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, is actively participating in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which began on Monday, March 10, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In her national statement, Devi reaffirmed the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to empowering, protecting, and fostering the holistic development of women and children. She detailed India’s strides towards gender equality across 12 critical areas of concern.
Devi focused on the priority theme of reviewing and appraising the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on its 30th anniversary. She discussed the global progress and ongoing challenges in achieving gender equality, women’s empowerment, and fulfilling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Devi highlighted the transformative impact of government-led flagship programs that have improved health, nutrition, education, and economic opportunities for women and children in India.
She emphasized the need for stronger implementation and wider outreach to ensure that the welfare of women and children remains central to India’s national development agenda. “Through a multi-pronged approach, we are working towards a future where every woman is empowered, and every child is nurtured in a safe and supportive environment,” she said.
The session saw widespread participation from UN member states, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, philanthropists, academia, civil society, women’s groups, and UN agencies.
The Commission on the Status of Women is the leading global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. The 69th session will continue until March 21.
