A third-year undergraduate student of sociology at Shiv Nadar University in Noida shot his female classmate and then killed himself on Thursday afternoon. The police said the shooter, Anuj Singh, had fired five bullets from a .32 bore gun, three of which hit the victim, Sneha Chaurasia.
According to a video posted by Anuj on a university group before the incident, he and Sneha were in a relationship till she broke up with him in December 2022. He blamed her for ruining his life and said he wanted to punish her.
The shooting took place around 1.30 pm outside a dining hall on the campus, where Sneha was waiting for her food. Anuj approached her and shot her thrice before fleeing to a hostel room on the third floor. He then shot himself in the head after firing a bullet at a wall.
The police recovered four bullets from the crime scenes and one from Sneha’s body during the autopsy. They said Anuj had procured the gun from a local supplier as it did not have an ordinance number on it. They are trying to trace the source of the weapon and find out how Anuj managed to bring it inside the campus without being detected by the security scanners.
Sneha was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Anuj was also taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The police said they have not received any formal complaint from Sneha’s family yet, but have started the investigation.
The university authorities said they have set up an internal committee to probe the security lapse and are taking steps to enhance the safety measures on the campus. They also expressed their condolences to the families of both students and said they are providing counselling and support to the other students and staff members who witnessed the tragedy.
