Tandav case: SC grants anticipatory bail to Amazon Prime Head Aparna Purohit

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to Amazon Prime Video India chief Aparna Purohit in FIRs filed over the web series ‘Tandav’. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh granted the relief after observing that Purohit had cooperated with the investigation.


“In view of the declaration made, we confirm the preliminary order and direct that in the event of the arrest of the appellant Aparna Purohit, she shall be released on bail by the arresting officer/judicial court on such conditions as may be prescribed by the trial court. It said.

Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra, appearing for the petitioner, told the court that Purohit was cooperating with the investigation.

The Supreme Court had earlier on 5 March 2021 granted Purohit interim protection from arrest.

She was accused of inappropriately portraying Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, and Hindu deities and unfavorably portraying the character who plays the prime minister in the web series.

Earlier, the Supreme Court, on 27 January 2021, refused to grant interim protection from any coercive action to Ali Abbas Zafar, the director of the web series; Purohit; producer Himanshu Mehra; serial writer Gaurav Solanki and actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.

He said they can apply for bail in the respective courts in the FIR filed in connection with the web series.

Purohit appealed to the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court’s order denying her anticipatory bail, saying that she was not vigilant and acted irresponsibly, thereby allowing her to be prosecuted by allowing the streaming of a film that violates the fundamental rights of most citizens. of this country.

On 19 January 2021, an FIR was lodged on the complaint of Balbir Azad of Raunija village under Rabupura police station in Greater Noida.
