Union Minister Virendra Kumar distributes PPE kits and health cards to sanitation workers in Jammu

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, visited Jammu on Friday to promote the Ministry’s key welfare schemes in the Union Territory. During the visit, Kumar distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and Ayushman Bharat health cards to Sewer and Septic Tank.

The NAMASTE scheme is a flagship initiative aimed at enhancing the safety, dignity, and social-economic status of Safai Karamcharis, particularly those engaged in sanitation work. The scheme focuses on improving their occupational safety by providing protective equipment, safety devices, and mechanisation tools. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to creating safer working conditions for sanitation workers across urban India.

PPE kits distributed at the event included essential protective garments such as masks, gloves, goggles, face shields, gowns, and shoe covers, ensuring that frontline workers are shielded from health hazards while performing their duties. The Ayushman health cards, part of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), offer cashless and paperless healthcare services to the workers at empanelled hospitals, further securing their health and wellbeing.

Dr. Kumar also visited the Outreach and Drop-In Centre (ODIC) operated by the ‘JK Society for the Promotion of Youth and Masses’ in Jammu, which runs under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).

The event reinforced the government’s commitment to “Vanchiton Ko Variyata,” ensuring that marginalised communities receive the support they need. This aligns with the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat”—a developed India where every individual has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from national progress.

The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Jammu & Kashmir’s Minister Sakina Masood Itoo, MLAs Shyam Lal Sharma, Yudvir Sethi, Arvind Gupta, NSKFDC Managing Director Prabhat Kumar Singh, and Jammu Municipal Commissioner Devansh Yadav.
