Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu attended a Creole Day event hosted by the Embassy of Saint Lucia in the Republic of China (Taiwan), Oct. 25 in Taipei City.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Creole Day, also called Jounen Kwéyòl, takes place annually on the last Sunday of October. It promotes dance, music, languages and traditional culture, which integrates African, Caribbean Indigenous and European colonial elements.

Wu noted that Taiwan and St. Lucia both cherish their diverse, multicultural societies and said he looked forward to deepening exchanges in festivals and gourmets to facilitate mutual understanding.

In response, Ambassador Robert K. Lewis emphasized that passing on Creole culture is vital to preserving St. Lucia’s heritage. He also expressed condolences on behalf of St. Lucia’s government on the damage caused by the recent Typhoon Champi, the MOFA said.

Taiwan is committed to strengthening cooperation with the Caribbean ally in agriculture, education, and information and communications technology as well as public health, the ministry said. (POC-E)
