Foreign Minister Lin addresses Formosa Club meeting in Taiwan

HomeUpdatesForeign Minister Lin addresses Formosa Club meeting in Taiwan
The Formosa Club is holding its annual conference from Oct. 24 to Oct. 28 in Taipei City, with 49 legislators from the European Parliament and 19 European national legislatures in attendance to show their support for Taiwan.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung spoke at the opening ceremony, thanking the club for its work to connecting Taiwan and its European democratic partners since the organization’s founding in 2019. He also expressed gratitude to the club and its members for their vocal support of Taiwan’s international participation, as well as for calling for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan will continue to enhance cooperation with Europe in line with the government’s integrated diplomatic approach, Lin said, hoping to see the two sides work together to build reliable, non-red supply chains in critical technology sectors such as artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.

The minister added that Taiwan will continue to strengthen cooperation with like-minded European partners to defend its hard-won freedoms and democratic way of life from China’s attempts to exercise transnational repression.

Michael Gahler, chair of the European Parliament-Taiwan Friendship Group, said as Russia and China continue to expand their authoritarian influence, like-minded partners need to formulate responsive policies to any possible situation. He also said he hoped to see the Taiwan-Europe ties advance on the foundation of parliamentary friendship.

The legislators also issued a joint statement expressing firm support for Taiwan, reiterating commitments to deepening parliamentary cooperation with Taiwan and backing the RISK Management Initiative on International Undersea Cables proposed by Lin in 2025.

Later the same day, Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu hosted a banquet for the group and thanked the legislators for their visit despite the typhoon. (SFC-E)
