Matalan‘s clearance stores are famous for their big discounts on the prices you’d usually find in the regular shops.

This store has already launched its closing down sale, starting with 30% off a few weeks ago and now offering up to 50% off absolutely everything.

Staff have been encouraging shoppers to come check out the sale, warning them that stock is selling fast.

Posting on Facebook they said: “Our closing down sale continues and we are selling out fast, be sure to pop in and grab a bargain whilst you still can!!”

Shoppers have been flooding the comments across Matalan’s posts, sharing their disappointment in the closure.

One said: “So sad to see this place looking so empty.”

Another wrote: “Gutted you are closing. I will need to try get a visit in.”

A third commented: “Absolutely gutted.”

And a fourth said: “Aww no I love this shop. I didn’t know you were closing.

“My daughter and I visit every couple of months and we love it.”

As part of the closing down process the store has also reduced its opening hours.

It shared the new times on its Facebook page, which shows it will now but opening at 10am every day before closing at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The site will close at 6pm every week day until it shuts its doors for the last time.

A spokesperson for Matalan said: “We can confirm that our Blythswood store will be closing on September 30.

“We are liaising closely with our colleagues from the store and doing all we can to find suitable positions in our local store network.”

The news comes after the chain also announced the closure of its Portsmouth shop in Station Street on September 30.

It’s not all bad news though as a new shop will be opening just down the road at the Pompey Centre.

The new store will be opening mid autumn.

More shop closures

The retail sector has been hit hard in recent years due to the growth of online shopping, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the same time the cost of living has been rising, leading to shoppers cutting back on non-essential spending.

Brick and mortar stores have also seen a lack of footfall due to consumer habits switching to online shopping.

Beloved discounter Wilko is to close all of its stores by October, with thousands of workers set for redundancy, after it collapsed into administration.

Familiar brands like M&Co and Paperchase also went under closing all of their UK shops earlier this year.

House of Fraser is set to pull the shutters down on one of its stores in its latest round of closures.

Although, some chains have managed to defy high street troubles and are actually set to open new shops.

These include discount chains like Poundland which is set to open 15 shops in the coming weeks and Greggs which is aiming to open 150 new sites this year.

Meanwhile, we’ve also rounded up all the high street chains closing sites in September.
