I’m a skincare expert…the common mistakes you’re making every day and how it’s adding decades to your face

DESPITE what the beauty industry might tell you, your skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, according to a skincare expert, it just needs to be consistent in order to see results and fight visible signs of ageing.

Shelly Woods, Advanced Aesthetics Practitioner and Founder of Skin Techniques told Fabulous: “Inconsistency is the worst thing you can do for your skin.

Shelly Woods is a skincare expert with decades of experience.

“Keep a consistent regimen that is like a well-rounded diet for the skin, so when something works well for you, stick with it.

“It’s like working out to see results; you can’t just take one exercise class and get six-pack abs. It’s a routine; you need to do it regularly for it to work.”

She also advised: “Don’t apply too much product although tempting this will not benefit your skin.

“All you need is a pea-sized amount to cover your face – beyond that, you’re wasting your money.”

If you’re looking for budget skincare products that give maximum results, Shelly shared her top six buys that are under £15.

When it comes to what the most common signs of ageing are, Shelly said to look out for lines and wrinkles, structural rearrangements, and age spots.

Lines and wrinkles

Shelly commented: “As your skin begins to produce less collagen and is able to retain less moisture as part of the natural ageing process, permanent lines and wrinkles can form on the forehead, around the mouth, and at the corners of the eyes.”

Structural rearrangements

The expert was referring to “structural rearrangements going on behind the scenes”.

She added: “When we’re young, fat in the face is evenly distributed, with some pockets here and there that plump up the forehead, temples, cheeks, and areas around the eyes and mouth.

“With age, that fat loses volume, clumps up, and shifts downward, so features that were formerly round may sink, and skin that was smooth and tight gets loose and sags.

“Meanwhile other parts of the face gain fat, particularly the lower half, so we tend to get baggy around the chin and jowly in the neck.”

Skin structure changes as we age as elasticity decreases.

Age Spots

Shelly said: “Age spots are due to sun exposure and can cause many skin problems.

“Ultraviolet (UV) light and exposure to sunlight age your skin more quickly than it would age naturally.

“The result is called photoaging, and it’s responsible for 90 per cent of visible changes to your skin.

“UV light damages skin cells, contributing to premature changes like age spots so don’t forget to wear you SPF daily.”

Shelly’s quick skin care tips to prevent ageing

  • Wear sunscreen every day
  • Drink at least two litres of water a day
  • Eat less sugar – skin is composed of collagen and elastin, which make our skin
  • supple and soft. Sugar causes cross-linking of collagen, resulting in stiffening and
  • loss of elasticity of our skin. The more sugar we have, the more our skin starts to
  • suffer.
  • Stick to a good daily skincare routine
  • Invest in six monthly hyaluronic acid-boosting treatments
