Japan Considers Joining India’s UPI and Digital ID Systems

An official statement on Friday said that Japan is looking into joining India’s UPI payment system and collaborating on the digital identity system.

UPI is a payment system that has been adopted by Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore and UAE.

Union Minister for IT and Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw said that PM Modi’s Digital India vision has received positive feedback from various global forums, such as G20, SCO and G7.

He said that people appreciate how PM Modi has made digital technology accessible to everyone. He also thanked the Japanese digital minister for endorsing PM Modi’s comprehensive vision of Digital India.

Japanese Digital Minister Kono Taro said in a media interview on Friday that Japan and India are working on strengthening their digital cooperation.

He said that they are seriously considering joining India’s UPI payment system and finding ways to mutually recognise e-IDs. He said that this would help improve interoperability between the two countries.
