North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has given orders to stabilize the power supply on Rimhung Street in Pyongyang’s Hwasong district, where a large apartment complex has recently been built, Daily NK has learned.
“When problems arose with the power supply on Rimhung Street, Kim Jong Un issued an order on May 15 to solve the problem at all costs. The next day, on May 16, the Pyongyang Party Committee convened an emergency meeting with managers and technicians of relevant agencies,” a source in Pyongyang told Daily NK on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
According to the source, the Pyongyang Party Committee reminded local officials that Rimhung Street is a symbol of the socialist state and one of the main streets of Hwasong District, which was made possible by the energetic work and care of the Marshal (Kim Jong Un). The committee noted that while the construction of the road was important, the power supply was equally important and needed to be maintained regularly.
“Due to its proximity to Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, Rimhung Street should always be illuminated because the Marshal sometimes passes by there on his way to visit the Supreme Leader [Kim Il Sung] and the General [Kim Jong Il]. Special attention should also be paid to street lighting and decoration,” the Pyongyang Party Committee stressed.
As a result, the meeting discussed various ways of ensuring a steady supply of electricity and expressed different opinions. But given the difficulty of the issue, the main thrust of the meeting was aimed at reiterating the need to solve the problem one way or another.
“The technical issues of power generation remain unresolved, and there’s a shortage of materials. It’s not that the state isn’t interested in providing electricity, but interest alone is not enough to solve things, and less electricity is being generated every year. Electricity officials at the meeting could do little but scratch their heads in embarrassment over the power supply problem, which has steadfastly resisted all attempts to solve it,” the source said.
But since the orders came from Kim Jong Un himself, the officials reaffirmed their determination to solve the problem, and the participants eventually agreed to reduce the amount of electricity sent to the provinces and suburbs of Pyongyang and send more of it to Rimhung Street.
“The Pyongyang Party Committee stressed that these measures will help improve the supply of electricity and water not only to Rimhung Street but also to the rest of central Pyongyang. But since it ultimately depends on how much electricity is generated, officials weren’t very hopeful,” the source said.
