Rishi Sunak breached rules over watchdog probe in row over wife’s firm – but is let off without punishment

RISHI Sunak has been rapped for a “minor” Commons ethics breach in a row over his wife’s firm. 

He was let off with a slap on the wrist for revealing details of the sleaze probe while it was ongoing.

Parliament’s standards chief had been investigating whether the PM had failed to declare that his wife Akshata Murthy owned shares in childcare company Koru Kids.

Daniel Greenberg has since ruled Mr Sunak inadvertently” broke the MPs code with this oversight.

But the case was expanded because during the inquiry Downing Street had released statements disclosing details of the probe, which is against confidentiality rules.

In a report issued today the Committee on Standards stung the PM for a “minor and inadvertent breach”.

It said: “Mr Sunak’s staff should not have issued any statement about the details of the case under investigation, without the approval of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

“The Commissioner has made clear that it had no impact on his inquiry.

“Nevertheless, it constitutes a breach that should not have occurred.”

The PM is said to have admitted that “with hindsight” he would have ordered his staff not to issue details about the case. 

The initial row came earlier this year after Mr Sunak was being grilled on his new childcare expansion policy, and failing to declare Ms Murthy’s shares.
