Apple’s dating-app payment conditions now ‘in line,’ Dutch regulator says

The Dutch competition authority on Saturday said Apple’s latest proposal on payment conditions for dating apps addresses the regulator’s concerns.

Apple late Friday announced further changes to the mechanism it devised to comply with a December authority order from the Dutch regulator to allow dating apps to use alternatives to Apple’s own payment system for in-app purchases in the Netherlands.

“With this concession, Apple will meet the requirements that the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) set under European and Dutch competition rules,” the regulator said in a statement.

“We are glad that Apple has finally brought its conditions in line with European and Dutch competition rules,” Dutch competition chief Martijn Snoep said in the statement.

After weekly fines totaling €50 million for non-compliance, Apple managed to avert a new order with higher penalties.

The ACM didn’t consult developers on Apple’s latest offer before publishing its statement. A spokesperson said the authority had “in recent times been in regular contact with dating-app providers over the case.”

EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager has repeatedly cited the Dutch case when discussing deliberate non-compliance by Big Tech.
