All hostages in Russian prison rescued

All of the terrorists have been ‘neutralized’ during the storming of the correctional facility in Volgograd

Security forces were successful in storming the Volgograd prison, where several inmates had attacked guards and taken hostages earlier on Friday, the Russian national guard has confirmed. All of the terrorists have been “neutralized,” and all the hostages have been released.

According to WarGonzo, a Telegram channel, one of the hostage takers was wearing a suicide belt which failed to go off. It remains unclear whether or not the belt was real.

The identities of the attackers have been confirmed, media reports claim, citing court records. One of the four suspects had been imprisoned for murder while the other three were convicted on drug trafficking charges. The suspects are supposedly natives of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

“Snipers from the special forces of the Russian National Guard in the Volgograd region neutralized four prisoners who had taken prison workers hostage with four precise shots,” the service said in a statement.

Previously, Governor Andrey Bocharov reported that at least four prison employees had been hospitalized following the attack. Unconfirmed media reports have also suggested that there could be as many as three fatalities.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate two of the attackers, who were in critical condition after being shot by snipers according to SHOT, a Telegram channel. However, both of them eventually died; the other two culprits were shot dead during the storming of the facility.
