The Ministry of the Environment held a forum June 29 in Tokyo to promote circular economy exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.

According to the MOENV, the event involved around 100 business sector representatives, experts and officials from both countries. Under discussion were resource recycling policies, shared experiences and planning formulation to promote resource sustainability via technology innovation.

Deputy MOENV Minister Shen Chih-hsiu noted that Taiwan has established a complete resource circulation system since the government began recycling resources in 1997. Recent amendments to the Resource Recycling Act and the Waste Disposal Act mark further milestones in government promotion of full-lifecycle resource management, he added.

Shen said the government will continue to promote the circular economy at source and green transition through measures such as encouraging green design and use of recycled materials, as well as expanding manufacturer accountability.

Keiichiro Asao, former Japanese minister of the environment and current member of the House of Councilors, said that as Japan and Taiwan both have relatively limited resources, it is important for the two sides to promote the circular economy to enhance resource efficiency and supply chain resilience.

He looked forward to seeing both countries expand cooperation in recycling electronics waste and critical metals to address global resource competition and construct a resilient resource supply chain.

According to the MOENV, the event featured a dialogue on Japanese policymaking, Taiwanese policy measures to encourage green design and digital product passports, regional market development and experience sharing offered by Taiwanese firms and the Japan ELV Recyclers Association and a venture capital fund from Okinawa.
