Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi said that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait aligns with the interests of the international community and that the people of Taiwan will not accept China’s “one country, two systems” arrangement like Hong Kong.

Chen made the remarks during an interview for the video broadcast published May 11 by the U.K.-based ITV News.

Regarding visits to China by domestic political figures, public opinion in Taiwan is based on three core pillars: Neither Taiwan nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other; Taiwan’s future must be democratically decided by the Taiwanese people; and China is expected to reduce military tensions around Taiwan, Chen said. He added that such figures should clearly convey these principles to Chinese leadership during visits.

Taiwan is a good and reliable partner and will not weaponize its critical position in the global supply chain, the deputy foreign minister said.

Regarding the Trump-Xi meeting currently taking place in Beijing, Chen said Taiwan understands that the U.S. hopes to stabilize the situation through dialogue. He expressed hope that the U.S. will send the message that maintaining cross-strait peace and stability is a priority for the U.S. and countries worldwide and that China should not unilaterally change the status quo by force or coercion.

The deputy foreign minister went on to say that the U.S. has long supported Taiwan’s national defense reform, especially enhancing Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. He cited the arms sales to Taiwan announced by the U.S. last year, adding that Taiwan believes in the U.S.’ security commitment to safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Discussing the risk that China may take military action against Taiwan, Chen said that Beijing should not misjudge or miscalculate, as many authoritarian leaders in history have misconstrued situations and suffered serious consequences. He added that Taiwan continues to study possible scenarios and is preparing for any situation. (YCH-E)
