Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted a reception Nov. 4 in Taipei City to welcome political figures from democratic countries who are attending the 65th Liberal International Congress.
Chen said LI has been committed to freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law since its launch in 1947. Themed “Building Resilient Democracies for a Secure Future,” this year’s congress is of particular significance at a time when the rules-based global order faces severe challenges and authoritarianism continues to expand around the world, he added.
As Taiwan celebrates the 30th anniversary of its first direct presidential election, the deputy minister expressed appreciation to LI for its long-standing attention to Taiwan’s democratic development and support for Taiwan’s international participation. He also encouraged participants to experience Taiwan’s vibrant democracy and the people’s hospitality during their stay.
During her speech, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim thanked LI for staging the congress in Taiwan as a show of support. In the face of political threats, economic coercion and hybrid challenges such as cyberattacks, like-minded partners must expand cooperation to share experiences and support each other, she added.
LI Chair Karl-Heinz Paqué thanked the MOFA for hosting congress participants. He said he had witnessed Taiwan’s democratic development through multiple visits and is deeply impressed by its democratic spirit and vibrant election culture.
The chair commended Taiwan for tackling challenges with courage and optimism, adding that LI will continue monitoring the external threats faced by Taiwan and expressing hope of expanding exchanges with Taiwan and other democratic partners through the congress.
According to the MOFA, the 65th LI took place Nov. 2-3 in Bangkok and then transitioned to Taipei Nov. 4-6. It involves more than 100 LI Bureau members and political representatives from around 50 countries. (SFC-E)
