Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi received a delegation from the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories Aug. 18 in Taipei City to exchange views on the Taiwan-Canada relationship, Indigenous affairs and sustainable development.

Taiwan and Canada enjoy a close cooperation in areas such as the economy, education, medical care and trade under the auspices of the Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Cooperation Arrangement, Chen said. The deputy minister noted that the Northwest Territories possess a rich Indigenous culture and abundant natural resources and added that he hopes the two sides will continue to deepen partnerships in the fields of clean energy and critical minerals applications.

Shane Thompson, head of the delegation, said this trip was the first visit to Taiwan for all delegation members, adding that they were all impressed by Taiwan’s scientific and technological achievements. Their itinerary includes visits to Indigenous communities to gain deeper understanding of Taiwan’s many cultures, he said, adding that the delegation also hopes to promote tourism to the Northwest Territories and strengthen the two-way ties.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to deepen cooperation with Canada at all levels, including expanding exchanges in critical mineral applications, education, Indigenous affairs and tourism, to advance the bilateral relationship. (YCH-E)
