Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Chih-chung Wu said peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is in the common interest of the international community.
The deputy minister made the remarks during an interview in Taipei City for a segment about Taiwan’s preparedness for China’s military threats aired Sept. 7 on France 2.
According to Wu, as Taiwan has never been part of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing’s plans for Taiwan are not reunification but conquest. Located in a key position in the first island chain, Taiwan has the most advanced semiconductor sector in the world, while its democratic development serves as an example of an ethnic Chinese community that upholds the universal values of freedom, democracy and free elections, he said.
The deputy minister said there were more than 5,000 intrusions by Chinese military flights into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone in 2025. The government needs to show the world the severity of Beijing’s escalating threats and the importance of cross-strait peace and stability, as well as how Taiwan is fully prepared to maintain its social stability and economic development, he added.
Wu said the government’s continuous investment in national defense spending is a demonstration of commitment to enhancing Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. He added that the goal is not to engage in a war with China but to make it clear that Beijing would pay an unbearable price should it use military force against Taiwan.
The deputy minister said that a cross-strait blockade would have a devastating impact on the economies of not just Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, but the entire world. Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will help safeguard the interests of all countries in the region, he added. (SFC-E)
