Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu conferred the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy on behalf of Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung on Maya Yaron, outgoing representative of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, June 9 in the capital for her contributions to strengthening the Taiwan-Israel relationship.
According to Wu, Yaron, who took office in 2023, has contributed to deepening mutual understanding and enhancing bilateral exchanges in culture, education and tourism. Taiwan and Israel both value freedom, democracy, innovation and resilience, the deputy minister said, citing 36 cooperative agreements and memorandums of understanding inked between the two sides since they mutually established representative offices in 1993.
Taiwan and Israel enjoy cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and semiconductors grounded in their complementary strengths, Wu said, adding that the two countries will continue to expand their partnership and jointly contribute to global technology development and democratic resilience. The deputy minister further reaffirmed Taiwan’s stance of firmly opposing terrorism, noting that Taiwan voiced support for Israel immediately after the Hamas attacks in October 2023.
In response, Yaron said she cherished the care, encouragement and support from Taiwanese friends following the attacks and recalled fruitful bilateral cultural, religious and disaster relief collaboration. She thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, partners of the two sides and the Israeli office for their long-standing support, adding that she remains committed to maintaining Taiwan-Israel friendship and welcomes more Taiwanese friends to visit Israel.
Wu then hosted a luncheon for Yaron, with her successor Israel Strulov; the office’s deputy head Moriah Segal; Jeffrey Schwartz, co-founder of the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association; and high-level staff of the Taipei-based Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association and International Cooperation and Development Fund also in attendance. The participants discussed issues spanning AI, the economy, high-tech industries and trade, according to the MOFA. (YCH-E)
