Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu welcomed a South Korean cross-party delegation of National Assembly members June 8 in Taipei City, with the two sides exchanging views on geopolitical challenges and artificial intelligence development, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegates included Park Soo-young from the People Power Party, Kwak Sang-eon from the Democratic Party of Korea and Kim Jae-won from the Rebuilding Korea Party. Taiwanese legislators Wu Pei-yi and Kuo Yu-ching were also present, the MOFA said.

In his remarks, the deputy foreign minister noted that Taiwan and South Korea are both democratic countries working to counter authoritarian expansion and that the two sides have laid a solid foundation for cooperation spanning culture, the economy, the semiconductor supply chain and trade. He said he looked forward to expanding ties with South Korea in a variety of fields.

Park, who closely follows Taiwan’s economic and semiconductor development, said South Korea has been inspired by Taiwan’s gross domestic product per capita exceeding US$40,000. Kim expressed hope of exploring cooperative potential during the trip, while Kwak, who represents Seoul’s Jongno District, proposed boosting exchanges between Seoul and Taipei.

In response, Wu Pei-yi and Kuo, who are both members of the Legislative Yuan’s Education and Culture Committee, conveyed enthusiasm for increasing arts and cultural exchanges, the MOFA added.

In 2025 bilateral trade volume surpassed US$90 billion, up nearly 40 percent from the previous year, making South Korea Taiwan’s third-largest trade partner, the MOFA said, adding that during U.S.-South Korea foreign minister meetings, South Korea stressed the indispensability of cross-strait peace to global security and prosperity. The ministry concluded with a pledge to deepen links with South Korea across the board. (POC-E)
