Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Chih-chung Wu said Oc. 21 that Taiwan is committed to defending freedom and democracy and that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is in the common interest of the global community.
The deputy minister made the remarks during an interview in Taipei City for an article published Oct. 29 by Voxpot, an online independent news outlet based in Prague, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition to rebutting Beijing’s claims that issues related to Taiwan are internal matters, Wu said Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country that has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China. The deputy minister said countries in the region must enhance cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the face of Chinese attempts to change the status quo.
In terms of Taiwan-U.S. relations, Wu said the investment by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in the U.S. and the government’s plans to purchase more natural gas from Alaska both helped deepen economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
The accelerating development of artificial intelligence underscores the critical role of Taiwan’s semiconductor sector in the global supply chain, Wu said. As the U.S. high-tech sector is highly dependent of Taiwan’s advanced manufacturing and technical capabilities, ensuring Taiwan’s security is also in the national interests of the U.S., he added.
China’s military threats are real, Wu said, adding that if no moves are made to counter them, Beijing will eventually take over Taiwan with force and have control over Taiwan’s critical high-tech assets.
Wu called on the global community to work with Taiwan to avoid confrontations in the strait. He also said that Taiwan’s freedom and democracy provide Mandarin-speaking communities around the world with a different development model. (SFC-E)
