Economic power of Taiwan women on display in New York

Taiwan Gender Equality Week is set for March 11-22 in New York City with events showcasing efforts by the country’s public and private sectors to promote the cause, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 7.

Staged on the sidelines of the U.N.’s 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, TGEW will spotlight the ways women in Taiwan pioneer industry innovation and advance economic development. The ministry added that this coordinates with CSW68’s theme that aims to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and empower women and girls by addressing poverty through strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.

A forum March 13 at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York on the topic of financial resilience will bring together Hank C.C. Huang, president of the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance; Denise Scotto, vice president of the International Federation of Women in Legal Careers; and Kelley Currie, former U.S. ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues, to discuss how economic empowerment directly impacts women’s lives.

A cultural event following the forum will offer participants the opportunity to hear stories directly from women in Taiwan about how cultural heritage rejuvenated a community’s economy, among other topics.

More than 30 meetings organized by NGOs and local governments from around Taiwan will share the country’s experiences and achievements of empowering women through education, policies and social care with the global community.

Launched in 2020 by the MOFA and Taipei City-based Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, TGEW is a collaborative platform for NGOs to highlight Taiwan’s efforts to achieve gender equality in all sectors. (POC-E)
