The Boeing 767 overran a runway, crossed a public road, and struck several vehicles

Five people have been killed and several others injured after a cargo plane overran a runway and crashed near Miami International Airport, authorities have said.

The FAA identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767 operated for Amazon by 21 Air. It had arrived in Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico, at around 2pm on Sunday.

The crash prompted “a full ground stop” at the airport while first responders assessed the scene, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said on X. “Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients.”

Videos circulating online appear to show the aircraft travelling beyond the runway and crossing a road before coming to rest near a parking area. Other footage shows flames engulfing its right side as thick black smoke rises from the wreckage. The right wing appears severely damaged.

NBC Miami reported, citing a source, that the two pilots were taken to Jackson South Medical Center, while three other people were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Their conditions remain unknown.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was “working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened.”

One of the airport’s four runways reopened at around 4:15pm, followed by a second approximately 30 minutes later. Officials nevertheless warned passengers to expect continued disruption.

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to Miami to lead the investigation, with the FAA also examining the crash.
