Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung attended the Forum for Democratic Cooperation organized by Prague-based Forum 2000 Foundation May 27 in Taipei City, emphasizing that Taiwan is key to global democratic resilience and supply chain security.

Speaking at the event, Lin said Taiwan shows strong democratic resilience and innovative vitality despite facing economic coercion, cyberattacks and cognitive warfare from authoritarian expansion. Taiwan’s experience demonstrates that democracy can stay strong with resilient systems, active civil participation and support from international partners, he added.

The minister went on to emphasize that cross-strait peace is tied to global interests. Taiwan is working with like-minded countries to build a reliable technology ecosystem and non-red supply chains, he said, adding that these actions aim to ensure that emerging technologies will be used to uphold freedom rather than authoritarian surveillance.

Forum 2000 Foundation Executive Director Jakub Klepal said that no single country can deal with current complex international challenges alone, adding that global democracies must work together to formulate response measures. Klepal cited the long-standing friendship between former Czech President Václav Havel and Taiwan, and noted that Taiwan and Czechia share core values and enjoy comprehensive cooperation in academia, the economy, technology and trade.

The remarks followed Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu’s speech at the opening panel May 26. Wu hosted participants May 27 and said the forum demonstrates global partners’ shared determination to defend the democratic way of life and pledged that Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded countries to create a pragmatic and long-term blueprint for democratic development.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event marks the first large-scale forum held in Taiwan by a major European think tank. It brought together political figures, lawmakers, nongovernmental organization representatives and think tank experts from over 20 countries in Europe, North America and the Indo-Pacific. (YCH-E)
